Say “No” to Holiday Snacks! Tips to Avoid Overeating at the Office
It can be tough to pass up donuts and candy in the office on a normal day, but during the holiday season those delicious treats seem to multiply. Between office parties and co-workers bringing in leftover cookies, gaining a few extra pounds from snacking is more likely than ever. Luckily, we have some simple tips to help you skip out on office treats and avoid holiday weight gain.
Eat a Nutritious Breakfast
Breakfast might be the last thing on your mind as you’re rushing out the door to an important meeting, dropping kids off at school, or wrapping up your morning gym routine. But while it’s an easy meal to skip out, this decision will often leave you feeling hungry before noon. And the hungrier you are, the harder it will be for you to say no to unhealthy snacks around the office. Set yourself up for success in the morning by eating a nutritious, filling breakfast that will keep you feeling satisfied until lunchtime.
Pack Your Desk with Healthy Snacks
It’s not bad to snack if you’re doing so in the right way. Be proactive and bring your own snacks to work. Keeping your desk stocked with healthy items like almonds, rice cakes, and fruit will give you guilt-free snacking options. You can also pack cheese, yogurt, veggies and hummus, or other perishable items in a small lunch bag with an ice pack to keep them fresh. Not only will these foods give you fuel to get through the day and help you pass on holiday treats, they’ll also provide a variety of nutritional benefits.
Occupy Breaks with Something Else
It’s good to plan breaks throughout the day to take your eyes off of the computer and stretch your legs. The important thing is occupying those breaks with something other than visiting the candy jar or peeking in on the donuts in the break room. Instead, step outside for a walk or go chat with a coworker about your day. Avoid any spots with tempting food altogether – that way you don’t have to force yourself to abstain.
If You Do Indulge, Do So in Moderation
It’s okay to treat yourself every once in a while as long as you do so in moderation. Set limits for yourself and stick to them – if necessary, ask coworkers to help keep you accountable. Allow yourself one piece of candy per week or one donut splurge per month. This way, you can still enjoy your boss’ famous holiday cookies without feeling guilty later on.
