Educating children about diabetes can be difficult, but Baptist Memorial Health Care offers a unique option that is both fun and informative. Camp Day2Day brings together children ages 7-12 with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as children diagnosed as pre-diabetic, to provide them with health education in a learning environment that meets their needs. Camp Day2Day focuses on health and diabetes education, but also offers swimming lessons, sports, group counseling, nutritional guidance, and art.

This one-of-a-kind approach is a truly special way for kids to learn about diabetes. “Camp Day2Day thrives on teachable moments,” says Erica Freeman, Communications Specialist at Baptist Memorial Health Care. “In this setting, children will learn how to manage their health through fun activities and from peer-to-peer interactions.”

During the four-day camp, children will take part in fun learning activities that will educate them on all facets of diabetes, including nutrition, blood glucose monitoring, medication management, symptom control, exercise, and coping mechanisms. Fun themes like costume day and group events like creating a board game, making a diabetic first-aid kit, and ceramics will keep kids interested and entertained.

“The main goal of camp is to improve the health of campers by teaching disease management techniques in a child-friendly setting,” says Freeman.

Camp Day2Day is supervised by medical practitioners and health educators, so you can have peace of mind knowing your child is well taken care of. “There will be a 2:1 camper to counselor ratio, with one RN for every 10 campers with a condition, and a full-time registered dietician and health educator,” says Freeman. “Additionally, camp is held at a wellness center that houses a family physicians clinic.”

Camp Day2Day is June 6th-10th at Church Health Center – Wellness in Memphis. Registration is open now and can be completed by calling 901-227-3534 or emailing community.involvement@bmhcc.org.
