Charitable Giving Makes an Impact for Baptist

If you’re looking for a way to bring hope and healing to others in the Mid-South, you can accomplish this by supporting the Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation. Baptist is a not-for-profit organization and donations to the Baptist Foundation help sustain technology advancements and support award-winning patient care across the region.

“Since 1983, our mission has been to raise funds that support our research programs, equipment, scholarships, and health and wellness programs,” said Jenny Nevels, executive director of the Baptist Foundation.

For example, the Baptist Foundation supports the Baptist Cancer Center, the Baptist College of Health Sciences and the Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief, which provides a bereavement camp for children, teens and adults.

“The Kemmons Wilson Family Center for Good Grief is the only one of its kind in the Mid-South that provides ongoing, year-round bereavement support to children and families who have lost a loved one,” said Nevels. “All services are completely supported by donations and are free to attendees. A $1,500 donation helps send one child to Camp Good Grief, which includes one-on-one therapy sessions with licensed clinical social workers.”

Reaching All Corners of the Community

To fulfill its mission of building stronger, healthier communities, the Baptist Foundation also collaborates with local organizations through community outreach. An example of this is the Baptist Operation Outreach Mobile Clinic for the Homeless. Baptist partners with Christ Community Health Services and other community organizations to provide the homeless population with primary health care, vision and dental care via the mobile clinic. As a result of this clinic, Baptist is the largest health care provider for the homeless in Memphis.

“As recently as two years ago, the Baptist Foundation funded a new mobile van for the project,” said Nevels. “We seek external grants that help support these endeavors, but donations such as in-kind gifts, bequests and charitable giving through AmazonSmile allow us to offer much needed care to underserved and vulnerable community members. AmazonSmile is a great way for us to raise additional dollars to support these initiatives.”

Shop Online and Give Back With AmazonSmile

Since launching in 2013, AmazonSmile has supported 1 million charities, with donations totaling more than $80 million. The website (smile.amazon.com) offers identical items, prices and discounts as Amazon.com, but AmazonSmile allows shoppers to give back to a charity of their choice.

According to Nevels, AmazonSmile is simple and easy to use. With every eligible purchase, AmazonSmile donates 0.5 percent to a designated nonprofit organization.

“Each time shoppers use AmazonSmile to benefit the Baptist Foundation, those dollars support our Foundation entities,” said Nevels. “We direct funds where the needs are greatest, such as providing new technologies for the neonatal intensive care unit and helping children attend Camp Good Grief.”
