Three Tips for Staying Comfortable Throughout a Winter Pregnancy
Jan 30 • 2015
Being pregnant throughout the winter months can seem intimidating, but it is easier than you might think to stay comfortable when it’s chilly. By focusing on these three tips, you’ll find that a winter pregnancy can be enjoyable.
- Dress the part. Wear soft, cotton tank tops or shirts underneath wool sweaters to keep your skin from itching. Invest in great shoes that have rubber soles so you can feel comfortable walking on slippery surfaces. Put on gloves, a hat, and a scarf whenever you leave the house to protect yourself from cool, dry air, and make sure your coat is insulated for added warmth.
- Boost your immune system. You can’t control the cold weather, but you can do your best to keep yourself from getting sick. Wash your hands frequently, especially after coming in contact with high-traffic public areas. Eat more fruits and vegetables with each meal and drink a lot of water to flush out any toxins in your system. Use warm salt water to rinse out your mouth to prevent any throat infections. If you do feel like you are coming down with something, speak with your doctor for recommendations on what you can take and call in sick to work. Rest and relaxation can help your immune system fight off sickness.
- Take care of your body. Implement a regular skincare routine to keep your skin from getting too dry during the winter. Be sure to apply lotion immediately after a bath and use a moisturizing balm on your lips regularly. When possible, get a head, foot, and back massage to improve circulation. Consider joining a prenatal fitness class to ensure you’re getting the right exercise even when it’s chilly outside. Practice things like yoga and meditation to help you relax your mind.
