Five Great New Year’s Resolutions for Women

For many women, the New Year is a time to focus on getting fit and healthy. However, the typical resolutions of simply joining a gym and eating better often end up by the wayside after a few weeks. By developing more specific, unique resolutions, women may find it easier to stick with their goals in the long-term. Consider these five suggestions for improving your health in 2015.
- Avoid overeating. Instead of completely cutting out things like sugar or carbohydrates, practice moderation. Not only is this more realistic for many women, but it also gives you the chance to indulge every once in a while. This makes the resolution easier to maintain long-term because you don’t find yourself feeling deprived of your favorite dessert or appetizer. It is certainly okay to enjoy foods that are not necessarily healthy as long as it is done sparingly.
- Try a new workout strategy. Do you tell yourself you’re going to join a gym every year but find yourself wasting that membership money because the treadmill doesn’t catch your fancy? These days, there are so many unique fitness classes that you can sign up for. Search for fitness classes in your area to see what offerings there are to choose from. Chances are, you’ll find something you feel passionate about doing and this will make it easier for you to commit.
- Stay up-to-date on health exams. Women have a variety of different health exams that come into play at different times of their lives. It is important that you know which screenings you should be getting each year based on your age. These will not only improve your overall health, but can also be crucial in the early detection of diseases.
- Take time for yourself. For many women, it can be difficult to balance work, children, and taking care of things around the home as well as setting aside personal time. Stress can take a toll on the body both physically and mentally, so it is important to focus on tackling any stresses you may have. Do something for yourself each day, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time. Set aside time with friends, do yoga or meditate to find relaxation, or treat yourself to a massage.
- Don’t underestimate the power of sleep. Sleeping not only helps you feel more energized throughout the day, but it also puts you in a better mood and can help you lose weight. Getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night helps your mind and body function better. Avoid food two hours before you sleep and eliminate light in your bedroom to get a deeper sleep. Developing a schedule that identifies your daily responsibilities can help you allocate your time.
