Pre-Workout Nutrition Tips for Active Adults
Beginning an exercise regimen also means changing your diet. It is important that you get the correct pre-workout nutrition necessary to provide the energy and nutrients needed to get you through a workout. This is especially true if you’re partaking in an activity that is high-intensity. Try following these nutrition tips before starting your next fitness routine.
Keep the Carbs
Many people advocate for cutting carbohydrates out of a diet to lose weight, but for people who are working out frequently it is important to make sure your diet includes whole grains, beans, potatoes, and other foods that are high in carbohydrates. This is because exercise causes your body to burn glycogen for energy. Keep in mind that you’ll want these carbs to come from whole wheat products.
Determine How Much Protein You Need
Protein is important for helping you maintain your muscles. Go for lean meat options like poultry, beans, fish, nuts, and eggs instead of supplements. Milk is also a great option, especially immediately after a workout, because it contains whey protein that is absorbed quickly by the muscles. Additionally, the calcium found in milk can help keep your bones strong.
Snack the Right Way
Having small snacks before exercise and throughout the day can help keep you satisfied and maintain your blood sugar levels. The important thing is making sure you’re choosing healthy snacks that can benefit your body, not hurt it. Consider things like yogurt, granola bars, fruit, vegetables, or energy bars. Snacking throughout the day can also keep you from overindulging after your workout is complete.
Fluids are essential before, during, and after a workout in order to prevent you from becoming dehydrated. You should drink 2-3 cups of water before a workout, ½-1 cup of water every 20 minutes during a workout, and 2-3 cups of water after your workout. If you are exercising for more than an hour, you may also want to consume a sports drink to help replace electrolytes lost through sweat.
